Mass grave

This paper deals with the ancient mass graves situating in Sindh, a southern province of Pakistan. No one research scholar has written or brought on record this heritage yet. The local people think that these graves belong to companions of Holy Prophet (PBUH) but it has been tried to prove that these are mass graves.

Mass grave

The mass graves have been found in the entire world. In Sindh Pakistan the ancient mass graves are also situated near the foothills of Khirthar Mountain Range from Ranikot Fort, District Jamshoro to Freedabad, Dadu District. Possibly, these graves might have been situated beyond up to Jacobabad Sindh including Sibi Balochistan. Such graves have been observed in Sukkur Region as well.

According to some historical accounts these graves also have been found in Punjab, Pakistan.  I myself have observed these mass graves at Makli Thatta, in Ranikot Fort and at Naig Shareef in Jamshoro District. Near village Achar Gabol, in graveyard of Gaji Shah, Bahlil Shah, village Haleli, near Rahim Shah Graveyard, near Gaj River, in graveyard of Guhram Fakir Gadehi, near Faridabad, Dadu District. These graves are too long measuring more than 20 to 30 feet.

Questions arise that whose are these long graves? What is period of these graves? Were the such a long people were buried in these graves? Do these graves belong to historical or prehistoric period? These all questions are unanswered and history is silent about these graves in Sindhi. No one local researcher has written about these graves. I hold that these are mass graves.

The historians and research scholars of world are of the opinion that such long graves are mass graves which are burial place of more than one person. According to book “Current concept in Forensic Entomology” edited by Jens Ahmedt and co-editors, it is mentioned that “a mass grave is a place where three or several corpses executed, some times more than hundred” (2010: 276). In book “the Human Skelton Forensic in Medicine”, “the causes of the mass graves have been considered as burial places of people who were killed in tribal or other wars, attacks as well as in disasters, dangerous diseases (Wilton, Mohmet, Meryana:2013 :31). Eugene Jordan, in book, “the Irish attack on Christianity”, is also of the same opinion (2021: 84).Thus, the people were buried collectively in one grave which is called mass grave.

On other hand, some historical accounts reveal that the mass graves were worship places and later were covered with stones or clay. The book, “scientific investigations of Mass Graves”, just supports the opinion that these had background of “religious, spiritual and cultural beliefs” as well (Joanna, Roland: 2008: 22). To some other reliable sources, these long or mass graves in Sindh are of chieftains and while execution; the graves were made too long to show his power and headship. But, it is not justified reason.

Locally, it is believed that these long graves belong to “Asehabis” or companion of Holy prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) but regarding this the history is too silent that any companion or Asehabi of Holy prophet (PBUH) had become to Sindh during the period of holy prophet. Even there is no historical evidence that any Asehabi had visited Sindh during the period of Khulfa e Rashdeen. Here also question arises that had Asehabis mostly settled only near foothills of Khirthar Mountain Range instead of entire Sindh? Which Asehabi of holy prophet was as tall as these graves? No one knows. History reveals that people of Sindh used to go to Arabustan and used to meet with prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Sindhis also used to visit Arabustan in later periods and settled there. They called themselves Al-Sindhi. Still the descendants of those Al-Sindhis are settled in Saudi Arabia.

According to religious belief the local people call these graves of Pirs. But I am of the opinion that in these mass graves located in Sindh, the corpses  of that men are buried which were murdered at a time in tribal wars, attacks of invaders on Sindh in past up to medieval period. The disasters and dangerous diseases might be the cause of collective or mass graves.

Regarding ancient mass graves in Sindh, the proper and authentic research attempts must be made to clarify the exact history of these mass graves located nearby foothills of Khirthar Mountain Range in Sindh Pakistan.
